The government of China supplied Cisco with a list of keywords. Any website that triggered a single one of these keywords would immediately be blocked. This is the jist of it. Nobody could work out how to con the system. Experts and gurus from all corners tried and failed. But then Cambridge University announced their experts had beaten the system.
When data sent in to a China machine includes one of the listed keywords, the system bursts out resets to block the connection. But Cambridge experts say that if these reset packages are dropped from both sides, then the webpage being transfered will make it through.
With this news hitting the stands the reply was almost immediate from China’s Director of Information. China has announced it is already concluding work on a more sophisticated, less penetrable firewall to avoid “harmful information” reaching China’s ever-growing population of websurfers. There’s over 100 million already online. And further action has been announced, including a tougher hand on Cyber Cafes.
